The Philadelphia 76ers honored Allen Iverson by retiring his number 3 jersey during a special ceremony on Saturday, March 1.
Iverson a.k.a. The Answer will go down in history as one of the best athletes to ever play in the National Basketball Association. In fourteen seasons he scored 24,368points, had 5,625 assists, 1,983 steals and 3,394 rebounds.
The 6′ 0″, 165 lbs guard won the NBA scoring title four times, won the league MVP in 2001, was an eleven time All-Star, a four time NBA scoring leader, a three time NBA steals champion, a two-time All-Star Game MVP and the 1997 Rookie of the Year.
Iverson was gracious during his speech Saturday night at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
“My greatest moment as far as my career was just getting drafted but then you have a day like this. It is a blessing from God that I got my jersey raised and I am proud I didn’t lose it the way I felt like I was. It was a great day and I will remember it for the rest of my life. I didn’t expect it to be this nice. These people rolled out the red carpet for me. If anybody is a basketball player and they saw what happened here tonight, they should get their butt to a gym and work on their game because the way these people did it for me — they did it all. They showed me how much they respect what I did for this city and this franchise.”
